Join us for an in-depth look at Michigan’s Startup Scene: Past, Present, and Future, where we’ll explore the transformation of the state’s entrepreneurial landscape - from a region once plagued by “brain drain” to a thriving hub of innovation and growth. Pete Martin will unpack why it’s historically been harder for Midwest founders, how that tide is turning thanks to Michigan grit, SmartZones, and state-backed funding, and why investors are starting to recognize the Midwest as a smarter bet. Despite early-stage hurdles, Michigan has birthed founders behind iconic companies like Twilio, Handshake, Google, and Groupon, many of whom left the state. But that’s changing. With multiple unicorns now built in Michigan - like Duo, Rivian, and StockX - a new wave of momentum is here. Backed by $60M in a recent commitment, renewed R&D tax credits, and data showing Michigan leading the Midwest in VC funding, the state is shifting from underdog to powerhouse.
Pete Martin is the Director of Portfolio Management at the MSU Research Foundation, where he oversees a portfolio of over 200 venture-backed companies across Michigan and beyond. Prior to joining, Pete helped lead Michigan Founders Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and connecting entrepreneurs and investors across the state. Pete previously co-founded venture-backed startup ALTR (Series C) before returning home. Pete is passionate about building founder-first communities and positioning Michigan as a top destination for innovation.
